Kids: Bedwetting, Daytime Wetting, and Pain

March 2020: Rebecca Meehan offers Telehealth visits. This is a great way to help children and their parents address and make changes in pelvic floor. Please contact to discuss this option.

Bedwetting, daytime leakage, and encopresis (fecal incontinence, or “pooping” without knowledge) in children may occur or many reasons. It may be embarrassing for your child (and for you), limit their social and sports activities, and affect your family activities. You may be told:

** That your child will “outgrow” the bedwetting

** That an alarm will solve the problem at night, that your child is sleeping too deeply, or that you should limit liquids

** That it is behavioral.

It is almost never behavioral (although it might increase temporarily at times of stress or change). Children do improve their ability to be continent, especially up to the age of 5-6. After age 8-10, the numbers do not drop as much, meaning that early on your child may “outgrow” bedwetting as many MDs say, but by age 9, it is less likely. Treat earlier…not later!

And alarms do not always wake the child, or do so after the wetting occurs. Too late to make changes. Most kids are not sleeping too soundly or have bladders that are “too small.”

There ARE reasons for bedwetting, daytime wetting, and encopresis, and there are solutions to help your child stay dry and engaging in activities!

It is important to remember that leakage and pelvic floor problems are not your child’s fault, nor yours, and there should not be any shame!

When working with children with pelvic floor problems, we work with the child and the adults in their life. Treatment is very practical, and is NON-invasive! It is not scary or embarrassing. We work with you and your child to determine what is causing the problems, and work as a team to solve the problems. If you are searching for answers, please contact us. We will work with your child, you and your physician to help your child be dry.
