Clinical Decision Making in the Real World

Piston Science Part Two: It Depends! Clinical Decision Making in the Real World Julie Wiebe November 11-12 2017
Time to dig deeper. The Diaphragm/Pelvic Floor Piston for Adult Populations: Part One (aka The Piston Science series online) provided a foundational framework to help patients learn to create an inside-out strategy of dynamic stability, balancing muscular relationships and pressure systems with brainwork and motor control. The goal: to address pelvic health, musculoskeletal and performance issues simultaneously.
Now let’s take the next step and explore how to apply the knowledge and techniques more specifically in varied patient populations. Piston Science: Part Two will explore clinical decision making in real time with 4 live patients over 2-days. We will collectively participate in patient interviewing, assessment and generation of treatment ideas, treatment planning and progressions, and developing cueing options. Grow your clinical “theology” by critically thinking through guiding clinical questions: What’s your goal? What’s their goal? What’s your theory? How do you treat the why and who, not the what? What are the limits of your theology? When do you refer out? The cases will be selected by the hosts, so it will be a bit like a box of chocolates, “you never know what you’re gonna get” (if you are local you can also suggest a patient). However, the goal will be that the selected patients will have a variety of pelvic health (incontinence, prolapse), post-pregnancy (diastasis, pain), back or hip issues and fitness and ADL goals (recreational as well as higher level, and non-athletes who want to function in their day in a different and better way). Come and be ready to think and participate.
Who should take this course? If you are treating individuals with back, shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle or neck pain, this course will assist you in developing comprehensive treatment strategies and progressions. The pelvic piston theory and techniques allow all therapists to access and treat the pelvic floor/girdle in women and in men from the outside in. Athletes and non-athletes will benefit from these skill and techniques.
This is a clinical rehabilitation course and is intended for PTs, PTA’s, OTs and OTAs only. Intended for ALL therapists; being a “Pelvic Floor Therapist” is NOT a requirement.
Objectives: Following completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Develop clinical decision making skills to form a “theology” for care based in critical thinking that guides patient interview, assessment and treatment progressions.
2. Apply Piston Science concepts into multiple patient populations.
3. Learn to live in the grey area of “it depends”!
